Sought for a better understanding of the ways in which a given population is divided and the mechanisms of these divisions, along with an exploration and examination of the implication of these divisions. A structured ranking of entire groups of people that perpetuates unequal economic rewards and power in society . The best example of stratification is ancient egypt"s class; there was a hierarchy of people. Ascribed status: assigned to a person by society without regards to the persons unique personality and talents, occurs at the time of birth, age, race, ethnicity, sex, ability, gender, these categories are inscribed with social meaning. The four major types of stratification: slavery. The most extreme form of legalized social inequality for individuals and groups. Enslaved people become the property of others. The enslavement of other people has a long and brutal history. Ancient egypt and greece, and north america have now sex slaves internationally: castes.
