Convenience cultures: fast foods, ready meals & the industrial food system. Defining convenience foods & difficulty with defining this category of foodstuffs. Mcdonalds, tim hortons, restaurants offering take-out, street food. Home cooking engages in a nostalgia for the past: families gathered around in the kitchen producing & consuming a healthy, nutritious meal, convenience foods moral disapprobation, lazy or indulgent by not preparing your own foods. Bbc radio: tv dinner: food production has been industrialized. Industrialization of foods changed our economy: freed women from hours of domestic chores, made empty calories more convenient to acquire. Convenience technologies: domestic technologies, removed some of the drudgery of cooking & saves time for other things, ex. gas & electric stoves, microwaves. Soci2040 week 6: time-shifting technologies, enabled weekly shopping (rather than on a daily basis, foods kept fresh for longer, ex. fridges, chest freezers.
