Document Summary
Introduction to social deviance and its role in society. Deviance is not confined to only people who deviate from the norm. How do we determine the norm if we don"t know what it is. Richard quinney: you have no say over what is normal behaviour. , norms are made up by people in power. Norms are transient and change overtime therefore deviant behaviour changes as well. i. e. , smoking has become less of a norm. i. e. , marijuana become more of a norm. Deviance as relativistic behaviour: rule breaking defines deviant behaviour. Deviance in the criminal justice system: anyone who is labelled as a criminal, deviance described as dangerous behaviour. Lack of consensus: there are no definitive explanations. Enforcement is only introduced where there in complaining. Positive functions: clarifies social rules helps put things in perspective, tests rules may break them or challenge their validity, the same person who got shut down can challenge in court.
