30% of victims involved in crime have criminal records. Bulk of sexual offences take place in families. Criminal behavior is a violation of criminal law. Not in the code = not criminal offence. Investigators have looked at differences b/w criminals & non-criminals. Psychologists administer : minnesota multiphase personality inventory (mmpi, california psychological inventory (cpi, robert hare revised psychopathy checklist (pcl-r) Longitudinal research inmates impulsive, hostile, self-centered, immature compared to non- criminals (risk factors) Prediction isolate & identify risk factors associated w/ criminals. Measure risk factors in children to predict criminality. From age 8, can predict which children will be spousal abusers by the time they are 38. Personality dynamics of criminals are effective to predict future outcomes. Degree to which normal personality dynamics operate in criminals. Some criminals very social/interactive (e. g. ted bundy) Researchers attempt to identify individual differences b/w types and groups of offenders. Violent vs. non-violent offenders data does not reveal any significant differences.
