Social structures theory: locate causes of crime or explanations within the society. Social conflict perspective looks at the conflict between individuals and different groups. Park & burgess looked at what they called at concentric city zones ( circle in centre of city) Found that crimes rates fluctuated throughout the areas (rate and type of crime changes) Zone 1 retail, zone 2 transitional, zone 3 working class homes, zone 4 middle class, zone 5. Suburbs: defensible space: define areas of influence and improved opportunities of surveillance to bring an environment under control of its residence reducing opportunities of crime. Differential opportunities: ohlin & cloward, opportunity structure: legitimate or illegitimate opportunities (not necessary criminal) Thorsten sellin (culture/conflict and crime) culture/ conflict theory root causes to crime- what is acceptable and proper behaviour conduct norms are achieved through childhood socialization in childhood in familes. Interaction between people, notion of learning from others through communication.
