We have one of lowest police per capita in western world. Changing demography changes the way policing should work. Lareg number of retiring baby boomers in police. Now the police forces are younger but they are hired at an older age. Pressures on police that make it hard for them to do soft policing . Police think their basic role is enforcement but, if that had a choice they would be more involved in prevention and intervention. Hotspot policing: focus energy on high crime area. Cpted: use beautification of neighbourhood to get rid of street criminals. Re-invest in the area through lighting, cleaning, trimming of trees, warning signs etc Plice forces should not have a mandate crime prevention, but should play a role. Harsher sentences do not lead to increase confidence. Government in canada has a nothing works mentality. Fear of getting punished does not work for criminal behaviour. Which means getting rid of parole, community sentencing, early release.
