Police think their basic role is enforcement but, if that had a choice they would be more involved in prevention and intervention. Hotspot policing: focus energy on high crime area. Cpted: use beautification of neighbourhood to get rid of street criminals. Re-invest in the area through lighting, cleaning, trimming of trees, warning signs etc Plice forces should not have a mandate crime prevention, but should play a role. Harsher sentences do not lead to increase confidence. Government in canada has a nothing works mentality. Fear of getting punished does not work for criminal behaviour. Which means getting rid of parole, community sentencing, early release.
