Document Summary

What did we write on: there was no paper in antiquity, paper was an invention of the chinese and it wasn"t until the 8th century ad therefore its past our period by the time paper was invented. What did they use instead of paper: clay tablets. The samarians the minoans, and the early greeks all used original material which was clay tablets. Their writing style was severely limited by the fact they were impressing the writing into clay. The advantage of clay is that it is permanent if it is dry but it turns into slump (puddle) when wet. When caught in a fire, clay can be baked into pottery and once that"s happened pottery is permanent, doesn"t matter if it is wet it will last a very long time. Early greeks were heavily influenced by the minoans who used clay tablets.
