The performance of sexual acts for the sole purpose of material gain. Some women (and men) work independently through escort services, hotels, and bars. Some work with pimps and others don"t. Some work in prostitution because they have to and others because they want to. Many want out but are drawn back in because of coercive relationships with pimps and peers, and out of economic necessity. Prostitution laws make some of the activities associated with it illegal.
