The language of feminism and women"s and gender studies. The historical domination of men, maleness and masculinity in social relations; The often invisible structures which prohibit the equality of women in societies. Refers to the unequal historical relations among men and women. Affects the expectations, roles, behaviours and experiences of both men and women. Creates a hierarchy of characteristics where masculine characteristics are valued and feminine characteristics are devalued. Derived from greek word for lord or master (kyrios) Recognizes that women may be in positions of relative dominance according to race, class, cisgender and other systems of domination and exclusion. Allows us to recognize simultaneous oppressions and privileges in both individuals and groups. And what can be done with that power. A social institution for learning and acquiring knowledge. A medium for disseminating social and cultural norms and expectations. Social and cultural norms and expectations define appropriate behaviours, expectations and roles of men and women.
