WGST 1808 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: List Of Federal Political Parties In Canada, Equal Voice, Nonviolent Resistance
Document Summary
In our culture we are made to believe that power lies in the hands of wealthy politicians and their corporate allies. People are actually much more powerful when they choose to use people power. People provide services (keep everything running) to the ruler through a variety of organizations and institutions, so if people stop providing these services then the ruler cannot rule. While direct actions have made a difference, more grassroots work must be carried out to achieve the fundamental social and political changes that are urgently needed. Grassroots organizing is key to creating and building the values of the majority, to open up discourse for real solutions and making space for more progressive agendas. Real change will not be made by lobbying, but a lot of work by grassroots community groups to raise public consciousness and issues, to propose alternatives and to embody the alternatives ourselves when the government refuses to listen.
