Document Summary

According to folklorist alan dundes, he terms the word folk to mean to any group of persons that have at least one particular factor or idea that is common among them. What dundes means is that we are the folk because everyone belongs to a folk group though they may not be aware. The basic idea is that we share an identity which more often than not, is tied down to a single place. The documentary produced by george hornbein and ken thigpen is very nauseating and repulsive because it is based on a tradition that is upheld by a college fraternity at penn state university. The tradition involved eating salamanders which were dunked in beer and swallowed whole. Like there are many cultures in the world, this tradition is considered a ritual and is passed down from generation to generation.
