NSE-12B Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Nitrogen Balance, Fluid Balance, Constipation
Document Summary
Week 6 proteins: crucial components of all body tissues. Found in the cells of all living things. Proteins are critical components of all tissues i. e. bones, blood, skin they have many functions immunity: metabolism, fluid balance, nutrient transport, provide energy. Macronutrients found in a variety of foods. Protein is made based on instructions from our dna. Proteins contain: c, h, o and n: nitrogen is in amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. Carbohydrates and lipids contain: c, h, o (differently arranged) The building blocks of proteins are amino acids. Proteins are made of a combination of 20 amino acids. We must obtain essential amino acids from foods. Essential amino acids cannot be produced by the body at all or are produce in sufficient quantities, therefore we must obtain them from foods. 9 of 20 amino acids are essential. W/o proper essential amino acids, we lose the ability to make proteins & other nitrogen- containing compounds needed.
