BIOL 350 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Tarebia Granifera, Great Tit, Chthamalus
Document Summary
Biol 350 lecture 19 competition continued. Individuals of the same species competing for resources (food, (cid:373)ates (cid:895) Between different species competing directly for resources such as food and space. Use of a resource by one individual that then makes that resource unavailable for another. Intra = occurs between members of the same species, ex. Competition for food hyena vs vultures for carcass. Competition for light and other resources some species grow taller than others then they make shade for the plants under them blocking the access of that resource through exploitation. For species that are preyed upon by the same predator. Density-dependent predation or parasitism: the presence of more individuals of the same species results in increased predation or parasitism rates. Lynx predation increases with increasing density of hares, so hares experience more predation when there are more of them. Intraspecifc = competition for survival of the hares. There is a higher rate of predation if there is more individuals.
