BIOL 467 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Post-Translational Modification, Dynamin, Transfection
Document Summary
Biol 467 15/09/2017 lecture 4: model organisms and common experimental techniques in cell. Invasive experiments cannot be performed on humans, so cells are harvested and grown in a dish: primary cells cannot grow indefinitely. Transformed cells have accumulated mutations that allow them to proliferate for many generations in a dish. Can be treated with drugs, rnai and dna and are easy to use for microscopy based studies. Primary vs transformed: primary: cells that are coming from the patient/organism directly (harvesting the cells from the tissue). Advantages: can do a lot of experiments that you can(cid:859)t do o(cid:374) a pe(cid:396)so(cid:374), (cid:395)ui(cid:272)k d(cid:396)ug treatments where u can control dosage very well, rnai, transfection, microscopy. Two mechanisms for senescence: conditions become non-physiological. 1: telomere changes (cid:373)a(cid:374)(cid:455) hu(cid:373)a(cid:374) p(cid:396)i(cid:373)a(cid:396)(cid:455) (cid:272)ells do(cid:374)(cid:859)t e(cid:454)p(cid:396)ess telomerase, the enzyme that maintains telomere length, which triggers arrest via dna damage and arrest.
