BIOL 467 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: External Beam Radiotherapy, Chek1, Chek2
Document Summary
4 patients with glioblastoma grades i iii determined by the degree of necrosis in the centre of the mass. Necrosis = dark spot in the middle. Tumours get too large, grow very quickly, not good at being (cid:448)as(cid:272)ularized, so (cid:271)lood that (cid:272)o(cid:373)es i(cid:374) does(cid:374)(cid:859)t al(cid:449)a(cid:455)s go to (cid:272)ells that need oxygen or to remove toxins so those cells would die. Radiation therapy is used to treat cancers like glioblastoma. Also used in palliative manner when tumor is inoperable and/or where drugs cannot work (e. g. shrinks/eliminates tumours alone and/or in combination with surgery or chemotherapies in the brain: external-beam radiation therapy, placed in a big machine. Internal radiation therapy (brachytherapy) delivered via radioactive sources placed inside/near the body = radioisotopes in seeds in the eye to treat the tumor. External beam radiotherapy, these are sources that are coming outside of the body. Brachytherapy = when you have this seeds that are placed into the body.
