Document Summary

Brassociated reading: proximate and ultimate causes of behavior: how and why birds sing. In a good proportion of birds, the male has complex vocalizations, and the females do not. The male"s vocalization can be given the name song", whereas the female produce simple call notes and rarely, if ever, full fledged songs. Males in an area will each have a song that identifies them as a member of their species, with a certain variation, like a dialect, which will be shared by all males in that particular area. In figure 2. 1, we can see that the three songs do share something in common across dialects, but are also clearly different. Two hypotheses for the proximate causes of this behavior: the difference lies in genes. The nerve cells that are in charge of producing the song are different: the difference lies in learning. The youngins learn from males in their area who speak the dialect.
