Path 3000 lecture 4 january 15, 2020 neoplasia ii metastasis, risk factors, clinical manifestations, and epidemiology. **know the general trends for cancer but not the statistics. Three pathways of metastasis: through lymphatics, through blood (hematogenous spread, seeding of the surface of the body cavities, ex. Seeding of the peritoneum in the abdominal cavity. Hematogenous spread is maybe the most common one of metastasis. A colon cancer can spread to the surface of the spleen by seeding through the peritoneum. A tumor in the anal canal into the uterus is considered a direct invasion. It has to spread distantly or through a blood vessel in order to be considered as metastasis. Our immune system took care of a lot of little cancer that we do not know about. The immune system can also keep the tumor localized and prevent it from spreading into the lymphatics. These mechanisms are some of the potential target point that you can target a cancer.
