Bronchoalveolar lavage, or bal, is a process by which a bit of saline is squirted into the lungs and then collected to examine inflammatory status, pathogen level, and/or epithelial lining fluid of the lungs. H&e: sem shows in three dimensions the relationship of a terminal bronchiole (tb), respiratory bronchiole (rb), alveolar duct (ad), alveolar sacs (as), and individual alveoli (a). Each terminal bronchioles sub-divides into two or more respiratory bronchioles. The epithelial cells lining the terminal and respiratory bronchioles are the same. The only difference is that the respiratory bronchioles have alveoli.
