Document Summary
Scholarly literature is published and unpublished: data-based research reports = original research, conceptual/theoretical literature = discuss topic, theory, concept. Why review the literature: consumer of research. Phenomenological = compares findings to enhance knowledge. Grounded theory = constantly compares literature w the data being generated. Ethnographic = more conceptual than data based; provide framework for study. Case study = conceptual and data-based literature are embedded in the report. Historical = the literature review is the source of data. Very difficult to complete a literature review if you don"t have specific purpose. Similarly, it is important to have refined the purpose and/or problem to make your search manageable. You wish to research the effectiveness of smoking cessation aids for mental health populations. Need to refine the problem/purpose and/or question. Need to narrow to make your search manageable. Clients with schizophrenia, admitted for longer term stabilization. Smoking cessation aids nicotine gum, patch, etc. Too narrow = difficult to find usable results.
