NSG3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Autonomic Nervous System, Myelin, Neuron
Document Summary
Week 3 neurological assessment: cognition and perception pg. Pressure on nerves from weight of fetus and postural changes. Ns is developed to sustain life through reflexes. Ans = critical for first respiration, acid-base balance, temp regulation. Myelination = incomplete at birth; develops from head to toe and centrally to peripherally. Earliest tracts of ns: sensory pain, taste, smell, hearing, cerebellar balance and coordination, medial and lateral pathways muscle tone and gross motor movement. All cns are myelinated except optic and olfactory. Spinal cord continues to grow until age 4. Spinal column (vertebrae) grows with increasing height. All brain cells are present at birth and increase in size till 4 years. School-age children are steadier on their feet than preschoolers. Head circumference is decreased in relation to height. Number of neurons do not increase in adolescents, but support cells for neurons to continue to grow. Myelin sheath fine tune ns = more advanced cognitive development.
