To do this, we must look at: the universality of language acquisition, the components of language, theories of language development. Foundation of our perceptions, communications and daily interactions. Communication: language, speech, play and social interaction. Language learning and use are determined by: biology, cognition, personality, environment. Human interaction is essential to effective use of language. 5 aspects of language knowledge: phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics. Words (signs, gestures, pictures) are labels that specify concepts. Knowledge of the system of rules for combining words in meaningful phrase and sentences. Morphemes = smallest unit that carries meaning. Add and manipulate words to change their meaning and increase sentence complexity: happy unhappy, big biggest, walk walked, sleep sleeps. = knowledge of how to use language appropriately.
