PSYCH 1100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Pluralistic Ignorance, Cognitive Dissonance, Fundamental Attribution Error
Document Summary
Social psychology- the area of study that attempts to explain how the actual, imagined, or implied presence of others influences the thoughts, feelings, and behaviours of individuals. The scientific study of how we think about, influence, and relate to one another. Social psychology studies the individual within he group. Social psychologist relies more heavily upon manipulating a factor to see what effect it has on some kind of outcome. When explaining a person"s behaviour, we typically ignore situational influences on their behaviour. We use the self-serving bias when explaining our behaviour: we take credit for success (dispositional attribution) and blame others or the situation for failure (situational attribution) Actor/observer effect: when we act, we are aware of situational influences on us. When we watch another person act, we are less aware of the situational influence affecting them: the actor tends to notice situational factors, the observer sees only the actor"s behaviour. Fundamental attribution error underestimating the impact of the situation.
