GEOG 2210 Lecture : Economic Theory and International Migration.docx
Document Summary
Economic theory and international migration - borjas 1989. The article focuses on three related issues: 1. & skill composition of migrants 2) how do immigrants adapt to host counries 3) how do immigrants shape the landscapes of host countries. Obviously policy and wealth restrict (or encourage) persons to enter particular geographic regions. The hecksher-ohlin theory: the export of goods is akin to the export of labour; intense use of country"s labour and resources produces goods that are exported. These theories don"t do well when attempting to explain more complex relationships; ie these theories don"t work better than relationships between 2 countries, 2 goods, 2 factors of production (it"s too basic) Borjas argues that these theories ignore international aspects of labour migration and that a labour market exists. Clear border enforcement allows people to feel that they are being protected; convinces the general public that politicans have not lost control in terms of immigration trends.
