ANCS-1007EL Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Roman Citizenship
Document Summary
A bulla is a necklace with an amulet or a locket, worn only by roman citizen children. The status of a child, is usually that of their mother. The more elaborate a woman"s hair, the higher the status. It takes more time and more slaves to do. Status mobility of an individual is not common. Freedmen and women are the only common status changes. It is a mark of shame (for having been a slave) and honour (for being freed) Slaves are not allowed to have any familial ties so once they"re freed, they literally have nothing. They were more likely to have a funerary monument after death because they were more inclined to show their non-slave status in any way possible. Their former masters were also expected to provide a dedication/space in their funerary monument for their freed slaves. Slaves in the roman world were literally everywhere.
