Day 22 - Genetics (Cont.)
Hybrid Vigor
-Genes from 2 individuals that have genetically different backgrounds and put them together
-They have a greater survival and reproductive success
-Ex. In the food industry there are different cuddle that are crossed with different things so that
they can be used for different purposes (milk, meat, etc)
-Ex. Malaria mosquitos are concerning as global warming is heating up the planet, so these
mosquitos are being able to move further north
-the malaria virus is plasmodium therefore it is a multi cellular end parasite
-this can cause humans to have mutations to combat this, due to natural selection
-Ex. In areas that are malaria prone, there are specific mutations that are common:
-Glucose 6 Phosphate dihydrogenous deficiency (Mediterranean)
-Duffy antigens (Africa, Mediterranean)
-will prevent the parasite from entering the red blood cell
-Sickle cell anemia (Africa, Sahara Dessert):
-if you carry regular the regular gene, as well as
the sickle cell anemia then, then it will protect
you
-S- normal cell, s- sickle cell, Ss and ss will
possibly have this anemia
-F1: Ss x Ss
-People with normal blood will have a higher risk
of dying from malaria
-Normal cell is a circle like one, a sickle cell is
oddly shaped and not circular
Sex Linked Genes ( Traits)
-genes on the sex chromosomes, so on the X and Y chromosomes (females: XX, males, XY)
-Hemophilia (aka bleeders disease)
-this is a mutation on the X- chromosomes, where the blood does not clot and people could
therefore die from a small scrape that didn’t stop bleeding
-Ex. Queen Victoria
-H- normal bleeding, h- hemophilia
-P1: XH Xh x XH Y
-F1: XH XH (normal) , XH Xh (normal) , XH Y (normal) , Xh Y (hemophilia)
-the only way to have a daughter with hemophilia is to have both parents have the
recessive gene
-there are new drugs that can combat hemophilia
-In Canada, they use to do blood transfusion but they didn’t test for AIDS, therefore a lot
of people got AIDS because of this
-Red Green Colour Blindness
-C- colour, c- blindness, same thing as above
-Male homosexuality
-genetic link
-a gene in the x chromosome has been found to affect this in the same way as the other
genetic mutations above, that will affect gayness

Document Summary

Genes from 2 individuals that have genetically different backgrounds and put them together. They have a greater survival and reproductive success. In the food industry there are different cuddle that are crossed with different things so that they can be used for different purposes (milk, meat, etc) Malaria mosquitos are concerning as global warming is heating up the planet, so these mosquitos are being able to move further north. The malaria virus is plasmodium therefore it is a multi cellular end parasite. This can cause humans to have mutations to combat this, due to natural selection. In areas that are malaria prone, there are speci c mutations that are common: Will prevent the parasite from entering the red blood cell. If you carry regular the regular gene, as well as the sickle cell anemia then, then it will protect you. S- normal cell, s- sickle cell, ss and ss will possibly have this anemia.
