BIOL-1507EL Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Lycopodium, Vascular Plant, Isoetes
Document Summary
Hornworts resemble liverworts but are distinguished by their sporophytes which are elongated capsules that grow like horns from the mat-like gametophyte. Ecological importance of mosses these plants are common in moist forests and wetlands where they form a habitat from tiny animals. Many mosses exist in very cold or dry habitats because they can survive the loss of most of their body water and then rehydrate when moisture is available. Phenolic compounds in most cells can absorb damaging levels of radiation. Life cycle with dominant sporophyte, the sporophyte generation (2n) is larger and more complex. However, the gametophyte became more reduced and even more reduced during the evolution during the evolution of the seed. The development of the two conducting tissues of the vascular system are the xylem and phloem. Xylem cells are actually dead cells and only their walls remain to provide a system of microscopic water pipes.
