ENGL-0000EL Lecture 1: Rings
Document Summary
In act 3, scene 2 shylock is informed that one of the things his daughter absconded with on her elopement was a turquoise ring. The ring was given to him by leah. Shylock is clearly upset when he nds out about this: It was my turquoise; i had it of leah when i was a bachelor. I would not have given it for a wilderness of monkeys. This strong emotion from shylock makes the reader pity him. It gives him a more human face after this betrayal by his daughter and casts a negative and sel sh light on jessica who had previously been seen as the poor, oppressed daughter of a jew. The fact that leah gave the ring to shylock is tting with the rest of the play as portia and nerissa also give rings to the men in their lives.
