-Restricting access to the scene to only professionals that are needed
-Officers assigned to the scene
-Forensic investigato
-Coroners
-Any other individuals who are working on the scene
-Protecting evidence from possible contamination
-Moving something from its original location, since moving something could
influence the interpretation of what occurred
-People could come in and move things to interfere with the investigation
-ex. a family going in to move objects around to make a suicide look like a
murder
-Path of contamination will be set up, to restrict where things brought into the
scene ends up
-this path must be searched before people can be walking back and forth on it
-Can be contaminated by fingerprints, hair, DNA evidence
-Don’t want things obscuring, altering, or eliminating evidence
-This can affect the way evidence is packaged and transferred
-ex. bones in a paper bag so it can breathe and no mildew collects
-Proper documentation
-Take photograph of what we see, with a description
-Label all evidence, and document it in its original position, and number all the
evidence
-Who collected it, time, date, location, condition, and photographs
-The numbering is done in order of which it is encountered, so from outside to
inside of the crime scene to reduce contamination
-Proper Collection
-Use a method to minimize the contamination so the evidence can be preserved
-If there is no good way of collecting it then it may be necessary to analyze it at
the scene
-ex. bones that are seen in a fire, therefore moving it will cause it to crumble
-Proper transportation
