-Leaves can be simple, just a blade, or can be compound, where there are many
leaflets that make up a leaf
-The arrangement of leafs can either be opposite, where the 2 twigs come off at the
same point of the stem, or they can be alternatively where they do not come off from
the same point on the stem
-This can be extremely pivotal
-As important as distinguishing guys and girls
-Trace evidence is a very small piece of evidence left at a crime scene that may be
used to identify or link a suspect to a crime
-Trace evidence, through often insufficient on its own to make a case, may
corroborate other evidence or even prompt a confession
-Work with very small things, and may even have to be split in half for the prosecution
and the defence
-Botany: the study of plant material that might be associated with a crime or
suspicious death
-Ecology: the study of the environment
Issues of importance
-How to recognize material that could be of value
-How to preserve the material
-How to document the material to allow best possible use by a specialist
-Photographic documentation for plant and soil requires special consideration

-The general environment surrounding the crime scene may have relevance
-Crime Scene protocol may be critical to avoid disturbance or destruction of evidence
