Forensic Odontology
History
-First case of forensic odontology was Nero’s mother murdered his father’s mistress
and they discovered who it was through her teeth
-Because all humans have an identity in life, compassionate societies require that this
identity be recognized in death
Why?
-Legal
-Wills, estates, insurance, victims of crime, death certificate
-Personal/ceremonial
-Funerals, grieving, anguish of not knowing
Ontario
-PODIT
-There are 11 forensic dentists throughout the province
-There is so few so that they will all see a lot of cases and therefore it will make
them more experienced having more cases to do to ensure they are well practised
in their field, instead of having a lot of mediocrely trained and experienced
odontologists. This will also help keep consistency within the findings since there
are so few.
Why Teeth
-Enamel is very hard therefore it will remain intact for a while after death has occurred
-The teeth area able to withstand high heat therefore they are great in fire analysis
-They will mainly use the crown of the teeth to analyze, but sometimes the root as well
-We use FDI chart most times
-One discrepancy in match is much more important then a lot of matches
Surfaces
-Mesial: towards the middle
-Distal: towards the back
-Facial: towards the cheek
-Lingual: towards the tongue
-Occlusal: biting surfaces
- We use FDI form to number teeth
