Forensic Biology - Day 16 2017.11.16
-Autopsy
-Dr. T. Noguchi known as the coroner to the stars since he conducted many autopsies of
many famous celebrities
-In the video the death investigation of an elderly lady, who died in a hospital
-most hospitals have drawers to store bodies
-patient was found lying down
-1st part: external examination
-we always work from the periphery of the scene to the inside
-we notice levidity, which is the settling of the blood to the dependent parts of the body,
therefore the lower portions of where the body is lying, therefore blood will pool in the
lowest parts of the body
-in the lady, we can see that there is levity on her back
-looking for swelling
-old nail polish
-check for any any signs of lacerations of the scalp, lacerations are a blunt force trauma
from a tare in the skin, can be caused from weapon or from falling, etc.
-terminal collapse injuries, are injuries that occur when someone dies before they fall and
your head and other parts will impact the floor very hard
-a cut will have an angle on the margin from beginning to end, where as a laceration will
have a jagged cut on the edge, and there is undermining of the tissue, therefore it looks
like its been carved out
-washing down the body
-looking for signs of a defibrillator, which is an electric current that will shock the heart,
which can cause electrical burns
-looks at neck for evidence of strangulation, from hands or rope
-it takes 4 pounds of pressure on the neck to loose consciousness
-in forensic investigation, you can look for subcutaneous bruising that is not visible on the
surface due to defensive wounds, in the muscle tissue
-2nd part
-1st layer cut is the epidermis, 2nd is the hypodermis which includes fat
-looking at rib cage, there is an indentation in the ribs but they are recent since there was
no blood, due to chest compressions and there is no blood flow since her heart was no
longer flowing when this occured
-cutting through the ribs, the level of ribs he removes is called the plastron, in order to
expose heart, lungs, etc
-looking for tumour masses in the lungs and heart
-uses his hands a lot to feel the tissues
-he is looking at the apex (bottom) of the heart, and the heart has fat tissue on it, as well
as calcification which can occur in heart and ventricles, which will decrease the flow and
flexibility of them, which can cause blockage
-splitting the heart, and removing congealed blood that will look like gel, and post mortem
blood clots
-hemoglobin staining in the tissue
-looking at the metro valve in the heart, which will cause the valves to have a gap in it
and not work as efficiently
-he is looking at arterial sclerosis, causing a bit of blockage
