Deformation
*****DEFORMATION TO TELL GEOLOGIC HISTORY WILL BE AN EXAM QUESTION*****
ā¢Deformation mainly occurs near plate boundaries
ā¢ļ¬eld observations and mapping of deformation allows us to construct geologic history
ā¢Deformation includes faulting (rigid rocks) and folding (ductile rocks- rocks that can be bent)
ā¢Main types
ā¢Faults
ā¢Folds
ā¢Basic geometric mapping: planes
ā¢Measurable elements on a plane
ā¢Strike (orientation of a horizontal line): compass direction f a rock layer as it intersects a
horizontal surface
ā¢Dip(Maximum slope on that pane): the amount of tilting of the layer as it is measured at
the right angles to strike
ā¢Geologic Maps are a representation of the rocks exposed at earthās surface, how they are
deformed, and how they relate to each other. the scale of mapping depends on the level of
detail needed
ā¢Geologic Cross sections: diagrams showing the features that would be visible if vertical
slices were made through the part of the crust
