1004: Introduction to Health & Health Promotion
Conceptualizations of Health
Negative: (Post WW2)
- absence of illness
- Represented on a continuum (you’re ether healthy or unhealthy (dead)
bluntly)
Positive: (Modern)
- Health, illness, disease are viewed as distinct but closely interrelated (one
influence other)
- level of health and wellness is determined whether disease is present
- health could exist even when disease and illness is present

WHO:
- look at people holistically
Disease:
- defined as something very objective defined
- could be measured
- could determine presence of disease objectively by taking x-ray, blood test,
diagnostic test results
- could confirm that this is present very objectively
Illness:
- Cannot be measured
- Based on someone’s perception
Three Major Approach’s
1) The Medical Approach
- approach after WW2
- strong medical approach on physiological
- doctors held primary responsibility for health
2) The Behavioral Approach
-Lalonde Report → gave new perspective on health
- 4 determinates of health : Human Bio, Environment, Lifestyle, Health Care
- Lifestyle = most important
- birth of health promotion
- before doctor responsible for health, now you’re responsible for your own
health, you get to decide whether or not you take recommendation from
healthcare provider
