ANTH-110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Ethnography, Applied Anthropology, Participant Observation
Document Summary
Cultural anthropology: studies historical and modern day human societies all over the world. Culture is shared through all societies and perspectives. Diverse ways of viewing and interacting with the world, transmitted from one generation through another without dna or genetics. The work they do is ethnography: a detailed description of a particular culture. Living with culture and documenting life, which can be difficult. One way to learn besides watching is to also participate as much as they are allowed to: participant observation: a research strategy used to learn about a culture through social participation and personal observation. They avoid perspectives that are culture bound: theories of the world that are based on the assumptions and values of one"s own culture. They may live with groups of people for many months or years. They come to know the people in a personal way: contemporary problems and solutions.
