For children, playing is a time where adult roles can be tried on - little or no consequence for pretending to be adults. Anthropologists see children playing as a great opportunity to learn about culture - informs how play is culturally defined and culturally defining. Playing is a fun time for children - for an anthropologist, it"s a window into intimate aspects of cultural identity. Children"s play is a rehearsal of the adult world. (children imitate adults, and don"t lie and expose intimate aspects of their culture. ) Adults also play because of openness. = alternatives, options are avail. to us. If there were no alternatives, there"d be no play.
