EASC-101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Tryptophan
Document Summary
Evidence is mixed re: whether high intakes of protein from animal sources, especially when accompanied by very low calcium & low fruit & vegetable intakes, can accelerate adult bone loss. No doubt exists that feeding purified protein to human subjects causes calcium to be spilled from the urine. Some early american explorers sickened & died after consuming nothing but very lean rabbit meat for weeks on end. However, inuit survive for long periods on a diet constructed almost entirely of meats: they choose fatty meats & obtain a significant percentage of their calories from fat. Balances their high intake of protein from meat. Too much protein: no one yet knows exactly what percentage of dietary protein is hazardous. Meat-eating inuit typically consume less than 50% of calories from protein. Popular low-carbohydrate, high-protein weight-loss diets often suggest up to 65% of energy from protein: an amount that may border on being too high for health.
