Document Summary
Coast: hot on the heels of confederation in 1867, the canadian government sought to expand the territory of the new nation. It looked to acquire the territory north and west of the province of ontario known as rupert"s. Land or the northwest, which it viewed as a region ripe for agricultural settlement that could also become a market for goods manufactured in central canada. From the perspective of many english-canadian politicians, acquiring and developing a prosperous west was the key to canadian economic development and prosperity, as well as a means of enhancing canada"s power and prestige. With support from the british government, the canadian government entered into negotiations to acquire this territory from the hudson"s bay company, which the british crown had declared. True and absolute lords and proprietors of the territory when the company was incorporated through a royal charter in 1670: the federal government gave little consideration to the people already living in rupert"s.
