Two phases: western or former han (206 bce-9 ce) at chang"an, eastern or later han (25-220 ce) at luoyang. First han emperor: liu bang = emperor gaozu: reigned: 202-195 bce, was first a peasant. The han dynasty is trying to get out of the legacy of the qin dynasty and is looking for a way to sustain their own dynasty. Key developments in han china: synthesis of confucianism and legalism with the mandate of heaven. Importance of education, especially knowledge of the confucian classics: there needs to be consequences for actions, but nothing dramatically harsh and needs to work with the hierarchy perspective within the family, society, and politics from. Confucianism: confucianism now begins the cornerstone for education and the entire system. This is very much tied to your ability to rise from society. Threats: external: xiongnu, a nomadic group from central asia.
