Monks and other religious officials alongside merchants are the only foreign contacts entering through japan (aka the outside world). Sun goddess amaterasu: seen as the bringer of life as a central goddess within the shinto indigenous religion of. Japan: balance, nature, and the spirits are a balance in the shinto religion. The religon is not well developed or has a priesthood in this era, and is more personal. Yamato japan is made by political leaders to take more territory and trying to reinforce their own power even amongst themselves: they create a story and say they are the descendants of amaterasu. They make the claim that they are divine. Jimmu: contact point between two worlds and a connection point between every emperor is that they are from an unbroken line of divinity.
