HIST-281 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Pope John Xii, High Middle Ages, Political Philosophy
Document Summary
In the high middle ages, latin christianity underwent several significant shifts. By the 10th century, the latin church was in a bad position. Popular confidence in the church as an institution was at an all time love: pope john xii (956-963). The papacy started to turn around with pope john xii thanks to his negotiations with hre otto the great. He may have had some vatican orgies though. In this era, the popes were selected by nobles of rome, a ruined city. John was a member of one of the noble families and was only 16 when elected. Within a year after his coronation, then otto had john xii ousted as pope. This signaled that even if popes and hres were nominally on the same side, they"d be political rivals. The ottonian emperors continued to presume that they could name bishops of rome as well as any bishop in their lands. They took charlemagne"s side in the old emperor-pope feud.
