HIST-281 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Renaissance Of The 12Th Century, Al-Farabi, Ancient Greek Philosophy
Document Summary
Even before universities there was a new sophistication to latin writing. Considered the father of the 12th century renaissance. He left to become the archbishop of canterbury. He is remembered more for his philosophy than his politics. His motto was: "i believe so that i may understand. " We can compare this to augustine"s "faith seeking understanding": faith and reason. Faith should be the bedrock of the christian mind. Reason can build on that foundation: the islamic model. Anselm was similar to the islamic model of al-kindi and al-farabi. They sought to wed the best of greek thought to their abrahamic theology: anselm"s argument. His most famous contribution was his ontological argument. He suggested that reason apart from faith can prove god exists: denying god. He just denies the name or word god, not the reality which is that than which: guanilo"s complaint.
