HIST-281 Lecture 12: The Normans
Document Summary
In the 11th and 12th centuries, a new series of norman political rulers arose in both northern and southern europe. They can be traced back to the "north men" or vikings of past ages. They were fast developing into their own distinct cultural forms. Normans of normandy had become settled firmly in the lands to the west and north of the city. The robertian and capetian dynasties built on what had been left behind by the carolingians. This happened in paris and other close regions. Across the channel to the north lay the england of king alfred the great. His saxon successors did not all fare well. Fresh waves of north men and danes continued to arrive in the danelaw. They put pressure on the descendants of alfred"s house of wessex. The normans to the south of the channel could take advantage. The normans would soon launch an invasion of england from the south.
