HIST-308 Lecture Notes - Lecture 81: John Calvin, William Farel, Johannes Oecolampadius
Document Summary
Figures like faber and farel got erasmus-style humanism to luther-style activism. The french reformers didn"t agree with every aspect of luther"s teachings. Most of them would come up with their own vision of reform. Then they would export it elsewhere, like switzerland. Despite frequent anglicization of his name, jean calvin is understood in a french context. Calvin would usurp the legacy of farel and zwingli. In 1509, calvin was born to a middle class family in noyon. It is about 200km away from faber"s hometown of etaples. Due to financial contracts, he was able to study at the university of paris. When studying at paris during the early 1520s, calvin was not interested in the events of the reformation. Calvin was learning the humanist classics and civil law. Calvin didn"t become really radicalized as a reformer until the mid early 1530s. Up until that point, he had even been accepting stipends paid to him.
