The reformer community in france was usually referred to as the huguenots. For unclear reasons, maybe relating to dutch loanwords or the name of a genevan leader. By the 1560s, they were a sizeable minority. The king had to decide what to do with them all: the valois dynasty. In the middle of the 16th century, the valois dynasty was in control of the french throne. Upon francis" death, his son henry ii took the throne. When he died in 1559, his powerful wife become regent: catherine de medici. Henry ii"s wife catherine happened to be one of the medici. Leo x restored to power in florence: catherine"s life. Her life was largely dictated by western european geopolitics. She was married off to the future henry ii. Then a prince at the behest of her relative pope clement vii. He wanted to secure the good will of the french: catherine"s sons. Francis became king while still a teenager then died.
