HIST-308 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Hadewijch, Scholasticism, Meister Eckhart
Document Summary
Bonaventure"s model was the 6 winged seraph envisioned by francis of assisi. Each wing was a stage in the mind"s journey to god. Bonaventure"s stages lead from sense perception to intellectual reason to an even higher realm. The final stage is mystical contemplation of the incarnation. Bonaventure likened this to a kind of death of the ego. His mixture of negative theology, mysticism and scholasticism was emulated in the next century. Franciscans were not the only ones who pursued rational mysticism. Thomas aquinas experienced a mystical vision while celebrating the eucharist. All he wrote seemed like nothing but straw: dominican mysticism. The best mystics in the 14th century would be dominicans. He wanted the average, everyday christian to commune with god in their daily lives. It sounded like he was dumbing down mysticism. He didn"t take mysticism to the next level alone. He was influenced by the beguines: beguines. Hadewijch with her odes to divine minne: marguerite porete.
