PHIL-386 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Nel Noddings
Document Summary
There must be a way to get the money or make a deal with the druggist. Kohlberg"s system has a built in bias in which the moral outlook usually adopted by men is judged. To be more advanced than that which is characteristic of women. Gilligan"s critique is not that women can reason at kohlberg"s highest level; the point is that they choose not to. They are more interested in human relationships, attachments than rights and justice. Whether or not her study is correct and whether or not most women and men reason in these ways isn"t as important as the fact that her work points to a much neglected approach to ethics. She calls for a new moral perspective which noddings tries to answer: nel noddings. Our best picture of ourselves caring and being cared for (constrained by what we have done and what we are capable of, and it is attainable).
