Primary experiences and thoughts are rooted in the physical experience of the world: preoperational. Able to learn things about the world but are not able to manipulate them. Learning symbols such as numbers and letters and how they represent the world children begin to be able to express ideas and understanding in different ways such as drawing, talking, or acting out observed experiences: concrete. Must be in the current, lack understanding of the abstract. Children are able to understand physical events but lack understanding of hypothetical or abstract situations: formal operations. Individual is now able to understand hypothetical situations.
