However the words we use are flexible, usually have two types of meaning: Connotative emotional tone / secondary meaning: semantic the meaning of words and sentences. Animals do not seem to show structure in their communication. Syntax - system of rules defining how we combine words and make sentences meaningfully. (word order ex. Sentence > phrase > word > morpheme > phoneme. Phoneme - the smallest speech units (sounds by mouth) that (cid:272)a(cid:374) (cid:271)e disti(cid:374)guished (cid:862) , a, t, th, ch(cid:863) People are able to recognize a maximum of 100 such sounds. Most language use 20 80 phonemes english uses 40.
