Leaders aren"t just a product of natural ability. Often also a product of the situation itself: contingency model of leadership: focus on person and situation. In very favorable or very unfavourable situations, task oriented leaders thrive. In moderately favourable situations, relationship oriented leaders thrive. Need to inspire / win over support: resisting. When there are strong situational factors, it matters very little who you are. High status people cause people to conform more. They are less likely to conform themselves: commitment. Once you"re committed, it"s hard to change your mind: optimal distinctiveness: we differ in terms of how much distinctiveness is optimal. Some people have a very limited need to stand out. Others have a strong desire to be distinct. But may conform / obey in very strong situations. Higher need for uniqueness associated with: greater belief in conspiracy theories, being a fashion innovator instead of a follower, buying products associated with self expression.
