Leadership theories that tried to isolate characteristics that differentiated leaders from non leaders. No consistent set of traits all leaders have that non leaders don"t have. Leaders don"t work in isolation (people around them can make up for weakness/lack of traits) Must also look at the way they interact and act, traits are not enough to define effectiveness of leaders. Leadership theories that identified behaviours that differentiated effective leaders from ineffective non leaders. People can be trained to be leaders. Leadership style is a recurring pattern of behaviour. Autocratic style: leader who centralizes authority, dictates work methods, makes unilateral decisions and limits employee participation.
